The Zeitgeist Movement is a worldwide grassroots movement advocating social change, most significantly that of society transitioning from a monetary based economy to a resource-based economy. This group is noted on their website as 'the activist arm of the The Venus Project', a non-profit venture by designer and social engineer Jacque Fresco.[1] As of March 16, 2010, the movement had approximately 386,000 members.[2]
The Zeitgeist Movement is named after the documentary films produced, written, and narrated by Peter Joseph and released online. Zeitgeist, the Movie, was released in 2007 and a sequel, Zeitgeist: Addendum, was released in 2008. A third film is currently in production and is called 'Zeitgeist: Moving Forward'. Joseph originally claimed in a radio podcast hosted on The Zeitgeist Movement's official site that the third film will likely not have the title of "zeitgeist", so as to appeal to a wider audience who may have been put off by the negative press that the first two films may have gathered. He later amended that decision, stating "Actually, after much debate, it will be called 'Zeitgeist: Moving Forward'. The Z name is too powerful now, millions know of it. I think it would be a bad idea to break the trend now." The third film is scheduled to be released in October 2010. Peter Joseph has stated that its topics will focus on human behavior, technology, and rationality.[3]
Even though Joseph's first two documentary films were obvious inspirations for The Zeitgeist Movement, he has repeatedly stated that they have no direct correlation with The Zeitgeist Movement itself. He once said that, "Regardless, my films are expressions. They are not the movement, despite the name association. This is what I am working to make clear. The Zeitgeist Movement is not focused on Comparative Religion, 9/11, the Federal Reserve, etc. I know the relationships are still strong -- but as time goes on, the associations will fade, especially when the new film comes out."
