The cultural association of people descending from the village of Agio Pnevma in Serres that live in Thessaloniki released last year two CDs with traditional songs of the Darnakohoria region in Serres.The songs are performed by the choir of the association and i think they deserve a great bravo for their effort.The lyrics of the songs are mainly in the local dialect (even though in many instances standard Greek is used as well and i guess this happens because it was more suitable for maintaining the meter),so I provide,when needed, a "translation" of the most unintelligible to a standard Greek speaker words and expressions.

Some of the finest ancient treasures of Greece have gone on display, in Oxford's Ashmolean Museum in Britain, even though some of the discoveries have never been seen by Greeks.

They have been unearthed in a royal complex belonging to Alexander the Great and his father Philip.

Οι Μακεδόνες όμηροι ...

This traditional song refers to one of the most tragic periods of the history of Macedonian Hellenism,the WW1 era,when Eastern Macedonia was occuppied by Bulgaria (1916-18) and thousands of Macedonians were sent as hostages in Bulgaria and other Bulgarian occuppied territories (such as Kitchevo in modern FYROM,which is mentioned in the song) for enforced labour and many of them died there.

Song: The choir of the Thessalonian Cultural Association "Agio Pnevma",named after the same village in the prefecture of Serres,Eastern Macedonia.

Lyrics:
A small bird flew from inside Athens/it was roaming around looking for Macedonia/famous Macedonia with all her beauties/they took away from her they deprived her of her beautiful children/they gather youngsters and children and send them to Bulgaria/all night and all day they were crying looking for freedom/Kichevo is a high mountain,God please lower it/so that I see the villages of Serres and then raise it up/On Christmass Eve the bells were ringing/while the Bulgarians were torturing the poor lads.

"This book,edited in 1919 by the American Red Cross commission in Eastern Macedonia,shortly after the end of WW1 and the Bulgarian occuppation of the area during WW1 (1915-17) is a source of valuable informations about this turbulent period of modern Macedonian history.I always remember my paternal grandparents mentioning the three times our land was occupied by the Bulgarians (1912-13 1st Balkan war,1915-17 WW1,1941-44 WW2) as "proti Voulgaria","devteri Voulgaria" and "triti Voulgaria" respectively.If someone visits some villages in Eastern Macedonia,he will find everywhere in the monument of the central square a simmilar inscription: "1915-17 ΕΝ ΟΜΗΡΙΑ ΥΠΟ ΤΩΝ ΒΟΥΛΓΑΡΩΝ ΦΟΝΕΥΘΕΝΤΕΣ"-"killed by the Bulgarians under hostageship" and a list containing a lot of names below."

This song reffers to an incident that happened around 1890 in the village Neo Souli (at that time it was called by the turkish name Subaskioi).A local girl,named Panayiota(Panayi) Goga was working in the tobacco elaboration warehouse(kapnomagazo) of Georgios Zaharopoulos, who is mentioned in the song as "Υiourghousis"(Γιουργούσης). Her father, Athanasios Gogas,was informed that young Panayi was going to the tobacco warehouse not to work there but due to her relation with a young worker from the neighbourning village Emmanouil Papas (at that time Dovista/Δοβίστα) and the inhabitants,in the local dialect "Duvisni"=Dovistiani (Ντουβισνοί,Δοβιστιανοί). Enraged Gogas (mentioned as "Gogliaros", a satirized form of his name,) went to the tobacco warehouse,together with a friend of Panayi called Martha (whose name is mentioned in the song too) and beat his daughter tumbling her down the stairs.The song is written in the local dialect,the so called "darnakika",so a "translation" of the most unintelligible words to a standard Greek speaker is required.

Μετά από τη χειρουργική επέμβαση για να αποβάλει όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερο του όγκου της, η Andrea είναι έτοιμη να αρχίσει μια πειραματική θεραπεία από LSU που καινοτομεί ο γιατρός χειρούργων Eugene Woltering. Η θεραπεία στοχεύει στον καρκίνο της, με την παύση λειτουργίας ή δημιουργίας νέων αιμοφόρων αγγείων που υποστηρίζουν την αύξηση όγκων.

«Εάν μπορούμε να αποτρέψουμε αυτό να συμβαίνει, ο όγκος μένει ακριβώς το ίδιο μέγεθος όπως είναι σήμερα για πάντα και πάντα,» είπε ο Eugene Woltering, M.D., ένας καθηγητής της

Τα μικροσκοπικά κομμάτια του όγκου της Andrea εξετάστηκαν με τις δωδεκάδες των  αντι-αγγειογόνων φαρμάκων που σταματούν την αύξηση των νέων αιμοφόρων αγγείων.

«Όλες αυτές που είναι πραγματικές μεγάλες γραμμές (αρτηρίες), τα φάρμακα δεν είχαν οποιαδήποτε επίδραση.»  είπε η Andrea.

Μια γραφική παράσταση τους λέει τι δεν ελειτούργησε και τι, ακόμα κι αν δεν είναι ένα φάρμακο.

«Τι άλλο έχουμε; είναι μαύρο σιρόπι βατόμουτων» ο Δρ Woltering είπε.

Αυτό το πειραματικό σιρόπι που έγινε από τη μαύρη σκόνη βατόμουρων, κατέστειλε την αύξηση αιμοφόρων αγγείων μέχρι 60 τοις εκατό των ασθενών. Ο στόχος είναι να σταματηθεί μακροπρόθεσμα η αύξηση όγκων, χωρίς τοξικές παρενέργειες με το φράξιμο της αύξησης των νέων αιμοφόρων αγγείων.

«Μπορούμε να ελέγξουμε την αύξηση του καρκίνου, να κρατήσει τον ασθενή σε υψηλή  ποιότητα ζωής και με μακροζωΐα» είπε ο Δρ Woltering.

Ελέγχοντας τον καρκίνο, οι ασθενείς όπως τη Andrea μπορεί να έχει μια μακροχρόνια, υγιή ζωή και μια αφθονία του χρόνου που θα μπορούν να σταματήσουν και να μυριστούν τα

Το LSU είναι ένα από διάφορα ιατρικά κέντρα που ερευνούν αυτήν την νέα προσέγγιση στον καρκίνο. Είναι ακόμα διερευνητικό και δεν θεωρείται κατάλληλο για όλους τους τύπους καρκίνων ή όλους τους ασθενείς με καρκίνο. Αλλά θα μπορούσε να σημάνει ότι μερικοί καρκίνοι θα μπορούσαν να θεραπευθούν περισσότερο όπως μια χρόνια αρρώστια, κάτι σαν το διαβήτη, , όπου η θεραπεία περιλαμβάνει ένα μακροπρόθεσμο σχέδιο του ελέγχου και της πρόληψης.
